UPDATE: Fire destroys house in Quinte causing $250K in damages

10 a.m. UPDATE: Quinte West Firefighters and OPP cleared the scene after fully re-opening Hamilton Road.

Fire tore through a home in Sidney Ward causing $250,000 in damages early Tuesday morning.

Multiple crews were called to a fully engulfed house fire at 2120 Hamilton Road, east of RCAF Road at 4:52 a.m.

A neighbour called 911 and reported they could see flames inside the house.

"When they (crews) arrived flames were shooting from the back of the house through the roof," described Quinte West Fire Chief John Whelan.  "It was crazy."

He said the house is destroyed and now 'the tricky thing is’ the house has a ‘sold’ sign on it.  They are trying to contact the realtor and homeowners.

“We don’t know who owns the house yet, but there was nobody home,” he said.  “Thankfully there were no injuries.”

Fire fighters had the blaze under control within an hour.

Whelan later added he suspects the cause may be electrical as the homeowner was reportedly completing renovations.  However he added the investigation is still in its early stages.

Fire prevention is on the scene probing the cause of the fire.

OPP cleared the scene around 10 a.m. after fully re-opening Hamilton Road.  It was partially closed from RCAF Road to Meyers Creek Road to allow  crews to put out the fire and conduct an investigation.

Meanwhile, power has been restored for 1,146 Hydro One customers in that area.  It hasn't been confirmed if the two incidents are connected.
