One person was flown to hospital following a crash on Highway 401 involving a tractor trailer and a truck protecting a road-painting vehicle, provincial police say.

The truck was following the road-painting vehicle going east on the highway when it was struck from behind by a tractor trailer about 4 p.m. Monday near West Lorne, about 50 kilometres southwest of London, Elgin OPP said.

The driver of the protection vehicle wasn’t hurt but the driver of the tractor trailer was flown to hospital with serious injuries. The crash also caused a small grass fire that was put out by firefighters, police said.

Police closed the eastbound lanes of the highway for almost five hours. The area has since reopened and the crash remains under investigation, police said.
