Firefighters from Stratford and Perth East extinguished a grass fire in a farmer’s field at the west end of the city late Sunday night.
In an email to the Beacon Herald, Stratford fire Chief John Paradis said firefighters were called to the blaze, which could be seen by passersby on Highway 8 close to Stratford’s western boundary, shortly after 11:30 p.m.
Perth East fire Chief Bill Hunter said the nearby Sebringville Fire Station provided assistance with two tanker trucks and seven firefighters through the department’s mutual aid agreement with Stratford.
Paradis said the assistance was requested because the fire was located at the far end of the field adjacent to Highway 8 and was difficult to access.
Paradis said the fire was extinguished by 1:30 a.m. and investigators found no evidence to determine the cause of ignition.
Smoke could still be seen billowing from the field Monday morning, but Paradis said firefighters were monitoring the location for any additional flare-ups.
