OHSWEKEN — The first graduates of the Six Nations firefighter training academy will be celebrated Thursday.

The program is a partnership between the Six Nations and Emergency Services Training Academy, the Ontario Native Fire Fighter Society and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada.

A Toronto Star investigation into fires on reserves found at least 172 people have died in First Nations fires across Canada since 2010.

The graduation is Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Fire Station No. 1, 17 Veterans Lane, in Ohsweken.
