Oakville Ontario man missing after cottage fire

Oakville, Ontario man missing after cottage fire - PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — A 53-year-old Oakville, Ont., man remains unaccounted for after a fire destroyed his family cottage northeast of Toronto Tuesday morning.

Selwyn firefighters responded at about 8:20 a.m. and there were reports people may have been trapped inside the cottage, Chief Gord Jopling said.

Pierre Girard, who was staying at the cottage, remains missing, his family said.

His wife Claire Girard and her son Alex watched as fire investigators combed through the remains of their cottage on Lower Buckhorn Lake Tuesday afternoon.

“I just heard that the cottage was burnt down this morning and then we came here. That’s all I know,” Alex said. “I don’t know what to think. It doesn’t seem real. We’re just waiting for more news.”

Provincial police in Peterborough and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office have taken over the investigation.

Jopling said the building was destroyed so first responders couldn't immediately determine if anybody had died in the fire.

“All contents have come on down through both ceiling and roof. There are a lot of layers in there and it’s hard to see anything.”
