Early this year, the fire prevention division of the Milton Fire Department (MFD) charged the owners of an industrial building for a fire code violation for a second time for the same offence within two years.
Fire prevention officers determined the building, Ridgeway Home Furniture at 545 Main St E., which operates as a furniture store that is open to the public, had not had its sprinkler system checked as required by the Ontario Fire Code.
As a result, the Milton Fire Department charged the owners, Ellenhall Construction, directed by Adriano Brerda. In late May, the owners entered a guilty plea and received a $2,800 fine, according to an MFD release issued June 15. Brerda’s portion of that fine was $900.
Charged previously with the same offence in 2015, the owners pled guilty at that time and received a fine of $1,500. The maximum fine for these offences is $50,000 and/or a year in jail.
“It’s vitally important that sprinkler systems are maintained in working order as per the Ontario Fire Code,” said MFD fire prevention Captain Steve Ellis. “A fire occurred in this building in 2009 and, if not for a working sprinkler system, the damage would have been a lot worse.”
Safety, says MFD Acting Fire Chief Dave Pratt, is paramount. “We will persist with inspections and oversight, and issue charges for offences as necessary, to ensure compliance with the Ontario Fire Code for the safety of our community.”
