Millions of dollars in damage from heavy industrial fire on Parkdale Avenue North

Firefighters are extinguishing a multiple-alarm structure fire in the Parkview West area on Wednesday morning.

Hamilton Fire Department responded to a call about a "heavy" fire at an industrial building at 420 Parkdale Avenue North between Rennie Street and Mahony Avenue just after 5 a.m.

Dave Cunliffe, the city's fire chief, said with heavy smoke, visible flames and multiple businesses nearby, the department upgraded the alarm and sent more resources to beat the fire.

"Due to rapidly changing conditions along with reports of a compromised roof structure, the interior crews were forced to back out," Cunliffe said.

"As the crews were exiting the building heavy fire broke through the roof."

Multiple crews, some of which included aerial ladders, doused the flames with large volume water master streams. An hour later, the fire was extinguished.

There are no reports of injuries, but a nearby furniture business, a micro brewery and a food wholesaler were damaged.

"At this time the cause of the fire is unknown however the dollar loss is expected high, in the millions of dollars," Cunliffe said.

Cst. Krista-Lee Ernst, spokesperson for Hamilton police, said there will be road closures in the area for most of the morning.

Parkdale Avenue will be closed both ways between Barton Street to Brampton Street. There will also be closures on Rennie Street in both directions up to Shynal Avenue.
