Human remains found during investigation of house fire

Human remains found during investigation of house fire - The investigation continues in Kawartha Lakes after human remains were found in a house destroyed by fire.

This fire happened Monday morning and yesterday while an investigator with the Ontario Fire Marshal's office was searching for evidence to determine a cause, they came across human remains.

Two police cruisers were still at the entrance to the property Wednesday.

Just before 8 a.m. Monday, an OPP officer patrolling the area was first to spot thick smoke and discovered the house engulfed in flames. The amount of snow in the driveway made it difficult for firefighters to get their tankers close to the house, which is about 800 meters back from Mark Road, west of Highway 35. The property is surrounded by a forest.

The cause of the fire isn't known.

At this point the OPP won't confirm the sex or identity of the victim and are waiting for the results of an autopsy. But neighbours tell CTV News a woman lived alone the in the home.

“It’s completely devastating. She was a very nice individual and showed great community care with all her neighbours,” says neighbour Mark Ouellet.
OPP Const. Carrie Lanning says police are still working with the coroner, however.

“Because human remains were identified, we will work with the corner and secure the scene until the autopsy is completed and then will move on with any required investigations,” she says.

OPP also won't say whether this fire is being considered suspicious. They are set to stay at the scene until the results of the autopsy and the fire marshal’s office investigation is finished.

That autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday in Toronto.

OPP say they're expecting to issue an update on the investigation over the next couple of days.
