NIPIGON, Ont. - An investigation is underway to determine what caused a helicopter participating in forest fire fighting operations in the Nipigon District to conduct an emergency landing that sent one person to hospital.

According to the MNRF, the commercially operated helicopter contracted by the Ministry was engaging in forest fire fighting operations in the Nipigon District on the evening of June 7.

The aircraft was performing bucketing on the forest fire and encountered a problem while returning to the airbase to refuel.

The emergency landing took place in a forested area and the helicopter sustained damage.

The pilot, who was the sole occupant of the helicopter, was transported to hospital with unspecified injuries but a spokesperson with the MNRF said they are non-life threatening.

The Transportation Safety Board has initiated an investigation into the cause of the emergency landing.
