Firefighters find 1 person dead in an apartment fire near downtown Hamilton

One person is dead after a fire on a second-floor apartment near downtown Hamilton.

Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe says firefighters were called to 301 Mary St. around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Heavy smoke billowed from an apartment on the upper floor of the two-storey building, Cunliffe says. Firefighters learned someone was still inside.

Crews did an "aggressive search and rescue" and found someone dead on the second floor, Cunliffe said in a media release.

The fire was well involved but firefighters quickly brought it under control, he said. There was "significant damage" to the apartment and smoke damage to the rest of the building.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating.
