Fire at Picton apartment building
Quinte News

Two apartments were heavily damaged in a fire in the lunch hour Saturday in Picton.

Fire crews from two halls were called to 113 Mary Street after flames and smoke were seen billowing from an apartment on the third floor of the 4-storey concrete non-combustible building.

All of the residents had left the building by the time firefighters arrived on scene.  One person was treated at the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

Prince Edward County Fire Chief Scott Manlow says the flames were knocked down quickly with two apartments being heavily damaged and a few others suffering minor smoke and/or water damage.

Prince Edward Lennox and Addington Social Services looked after the residents and some were taken to the Salvation Army headquarters in Picton.

Residents in the east wing of the building likely won’t be allowed to return home until Monday or Tuesday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
