A fire at a housing development on the Hamilton Mountain caused roughly $1M worth of damage according to the city's fire chief.
Dave Cunliffe said firefighters responded a call just before 10 a.m., at 555 Sanitorium Rd., the development on the former Chedoke Hospital grounds.
The first crews on scene reported seeing heavy black smoke from a row of unoccupied three-storey townhomes that were under construction, he said.
Cunliffe said the first floor of two homes was on fire and there was heavy smoke in another nearby house.
"The fire was travelling between all three floors of both units in void spaces, in the ceilings and walls," he said.
Cunliffe said firefighters started "aggressive interior" operations on all three floors of both units, which had firefighters pull down the ceilings and open up the walls to find more flames.
It took over an hour to take out the fire, he said and two of the homes had "significant damage" according to Cunliffe.
"There have been no reports of injuries to fire fighters at the time of writing," he said, noting contractors were working in this block of units during the fire.
He said the cause of the fire doesn't appear to be suspicious.
