The fire chief in Quinte West is praising the quick actions of city staff during an ice resurfacing caught fire at the Duncan McDonald Community Gardens Wednesday night.

Firefighters were called around 7:20 p.m. where the ice resurfacing machine caught fire outside the building.

Chief John Whelan says arena crews made the quick decision to shut off two large propane tanks at the scene and also had most of the blaze out before firefighters arrived.

Whelan says all staff take fire extinguisher training every year through the Fire Prevention Division and that training clearly paid off in this case.

He estimates it will cost about $100,000 to replace the vehicle and the cause is suspected to be an electrical issue.
