Dry conditions have prompted Lanark Highlands and Mississippi Mills to put complete fire bans in effect.

Recent fires over the weekend, and dry conditions, led area fire chiefs to put the bans in place until significant rainfall is received. Fire permits can still be purchased, but absolutely no burning can take place. No fireworks can be set off during this time, as they fall under the fire ban.

Lanark Highlands fire Chief Gene Richardson said his department was out battling a 10-acre grass fire in the area of Concession Road 6 and Tatlock Road on Saturday, May 29, on Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry land. He said ministry personnel were still on scene on Monday, May 31, dealing with hot spots. The cause of that fire is “undetermined.”

Richardson said other area departments have also been out dealing with fires connected with the unusually dry conditions.

“We usually get more rain,” he said.
