Area waterways not safe to travel on – fire department

Stay off the ice.

North Bay Fire and Emergency Service says although ice on area waterways looks safe, the ice thickness has not developed enough where “we are comfortable having people out on area lakes.”

The service said inconsistent air temperatures can cause the ice to thaw and freeze, making the ice surfaces unpredictable and dangerous.

“Residents should not walk, ski, skate or play on any body of water,” Deputy Chief Greg Saunders said in an email Wednesday.

“Parents and guardians are asked to remind children about this important safety rule.”

The service also says dog owners should keep their pets on a leash. If a pet goes through the ice, people shouldn’t try to rescue the animal as they will be putting themselves and others in danger.
