Public Educator/Fire Prevention Inspector

The Township of King Fire & Emergency Services has a new and exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to play a key role in promoting fire & life safety education and the prevention of devastation caused by fire or natural disaster in our community.

By heightening public awareness through the delivery of effective educational presentations and public education programs to various public and business groups we will accomplish our mission.

As the Public Educator/Fire Prevention Inspector you will research and develop educational programs, promote life safety with the mindset of reducing devastation to life and property. You will seek out ways to be out in our community delivering programs and be innovative in ways and methods of their delivery. As a secondary skill you will also be able to interpret and enforce applicable fire safety codes, legislation, regulations and by-laws ensuring all classes of buildings/occupancies are in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code and Ontario Building Code. You will be responsible for the scheduling and maintenance of the mobile ‘Public Education Center’ and organization of our Smoke Alarm Program. You may also inspect and test fire protection systems, review fire safety plans/specifications, assist with fire investigations, and prepare/maintain related reports, records, statistics and correspondence. Additionally you will provide technical support and training for department personnel, liaise with fire protection professionals and undertake other general fire related duties.

  • Valid G class driver’s license (must provide a current driver’s abstract). Class “D” licence with “Z” endorsement would be an asset.
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent secondary education as established by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated customer service and public relation skills.
  • Computer experience in Windows environment.
  • Must be willing and able to wear a uniform.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays as scheduled.
The preferred candidate(s) will possess:
  • Experience, coupled with education in Fire Prevention Education to adults and children.
  • Fire Protection and Building Construction knowledge.
  • Completion of or willingness to complete the Fire and Life Safety Educator Certificate Program through the Ontario Fire College.
  • Passion for educating the public in safe habits and fire preventing lifestyle.
You must have a demonstrated aptitude for fire prevention/inspection and public fire and life safety education duties including excellent written, verbal and presentation skills and a commitment to customer service excellence. The successful candidate will be required to pass a vulnerable sector screening conducted by the York Regional Police Service, prior to commencing the position.

Yearly salary: $64,482 - $78,460 plus a comprehensive benefit package.
