(The focus of the position will be on the Plans Examiner however, you may be required to act in the role as the Fire Prevention Officer as required.)
Plans Examiner
Reporting to the Chief Fire Prevention Officer, you will review and comment on plans and specifications submitted to the Fire and Emergency Services Department for compliance with the Municipal Act, Planning Act, Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, Municipal By-laws and other related fire and life safety standards.  Also, you will be required to conduct final inspections under the Fire Code of all classes of buildings and occupancies within the City and participate in fire safety education programs and events.  You will review site plans, plans of subdivision, and coordinate your comments with other Municipal Departments as required.
You will also conduct comprehensive tests of fire and life safety systems during construction of new buildings prior to occupancy with our Building Services Department representatives, owners, architects and engineers.
The position requires a post-secondary education from a university or community college in Building Construction, Architecture, Engineering or Fire Protection or equivalent combination of education and experience in Fire Prevention. You have experience demonstrating your knowledge of the design and construction of fire protection, life safety equipment and systems in buildings. A strong working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, NFPA Fire Codes and other applicable statutes and regulations is required.  Registered professional Engineer with experience in Fire and Fire Protection systems is an asset. 
Interested candidates shall possess the following: 
Good working knowledge of technical aspects of:
  • fire alarms
  • fire detections systems
  • fire/booster pumps
  • suction/gravity tanks
  • voice communications systems
  •  elevators
  • sprinkler systems
  • standpipes
  • underground water supply piping
  • hazardous materials and processes
  • emergency electrical power
  • the ability to examine and analyze building drawings, specifications, calculation and reports with respect to fire and life safety
  • provide assistance/expertise and code interpretation
  • construction site inspection
You have excellent analytical, report writing, researching, interpersonal, written and verbal and communications skills, along with the ability to deal effectively and courteously with internal and external customers.  The candidate may be required work outside normal business hours as needed. 
Computer literacy in a Windows environment utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and computer aided design software systems.  You shall have the ability to work in and around construction sites, be able to climb stairs, ladders, etc., and maintain your footing on uneven terrain. 
You hold a valid class G Ontario driver’s licence.
As a condition of employment, a satisfactory driver’s abstract and vulnerable sector screening check must be submitted.
Salary and hours of work will be based on the collective agreement between the City of Markham and the Markham Professional Fire Fighters’ Association. 
Fire Prevention Officer
The Plans Examiner position may require you to work in the role as a Fire Prevention Officer as needed as per the description below. 
Your strong plan review skills and experience in the fields of fire prevention and protection as part of the Markham Fire and Emergency Services Department, which strives to provide the highest level of life safety and property protection to those who live, work and play in our community. Reporting to the Chief Fire Prevention Officer, you will enforce the Fire Prevention regulations of the Municipality and the Province of Ontario, by conducting comprehensive fire prevention inspections and surveys of all classes of buildings and occupancies to ensure conformity with all applicable laws. As an Assistant to the Fire Marshal, you will inspect and test fire-protection equipment and systems, prepare reports, review fire safety plans, testify and give evidence in court, as well as prepare seminars on fire prevention and fire safety and present them to groups and members of the public.
