Position Purpose:
Reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief, the Training Officer is responsible for the establishment, organization, coordination and administration of all training programs including maintenance and documentation. Key duties include: developing and coordinating training programs, manuals, lessons and syllabus for both volunteer and full-time fire department personnel; coordinating the delivery of fire service related training programs such as recruit training, officer development, emergency care, vehicle driver/operator training etc.; researching and evaluating fire department policies, procedures, techniques and equipment; attending major emergencies as a resource or to provide support role for Incident Commander; assisting with recruitment and evaluation - screening resumes, arranging interviews, and creating new hire documents for Volunteer and Full-time Firefighters; managing Automated External Defibrillation and Ice/Water specialized training such as Trench Rescue, Confined Space and Hazmat; maintaining training records for all fire department employees; and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Completion of High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience as a Full-time Firefighter or seven (7) years of experience as a Volunteer Firefighter
  • Thorough working knowledge of all applicable legislations & regulatory standards, fire apparatus & equipment operation, safety practices & associated training methods
  • Ability to investigate, research & compile data for reports
  • Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to build collaborative working relationships with the general public, officers, firefighters, and staff
  • High degree of accuracy, attention to detail and record keeping skills
  • Effective organization skills; ability to prioritize and meet conflicting deadlines regularly
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and internet research skills
  • Class D Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement in good standing, and reliable vehicle to use on corporate business
