Fire Prevention Inspector-Officer/Public Educator

The Grimsby Fire Department (GFD) is currently seeking one (1) Full-time, permanent position for Fire Prevention Inspector-Officer/Public Educator (FPI/FPO).

GFD has proudly served the Grimsby community since 1879. The department has morphed and transitioned to address the changing needs of our community. Embracing the three lines of defense model for service delivery (i.e. Public Fire and Life Safety Education, Fire Safety Standards and Enforcement, and Emergency Response), GFD has committed to shifting the traditional priorities of fire protection.
"There is no glory in suppressing a fire that could have been prevented”. As a prevention centric organization, today’s GFD places great emphasis on a capacity to encourage the public participation and commitment into fire safe practices.
Reporting through the Chief Fire Prevention Officer to the Deputy Fire Chief, the FPI/FPO position will be responsible for carrying out all aspects of fire prevention inspections, public education activities and associated tasks to ensure that the public fire and life safety goals of the department are accomplished. This includes, but is not limited to, Fire Code enforcement, public education and fire prevention promotion and fire scene investigation.
The successful candidate shall be a self-starter possessing the required knowledge, skills and abilities to work autonomously drawing upon direct code enforcement specific experience. The new FPI/FPO shall demonstrate a capacity to express their conviction and dedication to a personal fire prevention centric philosophy.
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum two year Community College program (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a Fire Code Enforcement/Public Education
  • Demonstrated self-starter with strong interpersonal skills and ability to work autonomously
  • Certified Fire Prevention Officer – OFC; (NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector II); or equivalent
  • Public Fire and Life Safety Educator – OFC; (NFPA 1035; Level II); or equivalent
  • Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) – NFPA 921
  • Sound working knowledge of municipal legislation, Building and Fire Codes and NFPA Standards.
  • Valid G license, with clean Driving record
  • Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Additional Qualification considered an Asset:
  • Certified Fire Investigator – OFC; NFPA 1033
  • Building Code Act Qualifications – General Legal/Process 2012; Fire Prevention 2012
  • Eligibility for Building Code Identification Number (BCIN)
  • Experience working in a small, non-unionized team environment

Standard Hours of Work:

35 hours per week, Monday-Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required. 


This position is approved as a double bandwidth from $51,722 – $81,225. Compensation will commensurate based on the successful candidate’s certifications and previous work experience.

This position is subject to employment conditions as found in the Town of Grimsby Document of General Working Conditions (Salaried), is eligible for Group Benefits and the FD-OG-1.2.8. - GFD Modified Work Program for Full-time Staff.
