The Municipality of Oliver Paipoonge is seeking applications for a Fire Chief, which is a full-time permanent position.  Reporting to the CAO, the Fire Chief has leadership and administrative responsibility for the Oliver Paipoonge Fire Department that is comprised of 6 fire stations with approximately 20 vehicles and 45 volunteer firefighters.

Located in Northwestern Ontario, the Municipality of Oliver Paipoonge is a full service rural community with a population of approximately 6,000 bordering the City of Thunder Bay.  Agriculture, forest industries and tourism are key sectors in the local economy.  The Municipality has ready access to all major transportation routes.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Management of emergency incidents response including firefighting, fire prevention, fire inspections, firefighter training, first responder services and community emergency management
  • Creation, updating and implementation of policies, procedures, guidelines or protocols
  • Supervising officers and members and overseeing the Department’s stations and fleet
  • Ensuring the maintenance of departmental records including incident and training records
  • Developing and monitoring the department budget
  • Coordinating member recruitment and training
  • Liaising with the Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office and other authorities
  • Graduate of Ontario Fire College or equivalent, plus five (5) years of experience in a fire service in a senior officer position
  • Qualified and experienced in firefighting, fire prevention, fire investigation, and firefighter training and supervision
  • Comprehensive knowledge of modern firefighting and fire prevention methods and equipment
  • Knowledge of community emergency management preferred
  • CEMC certification preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of Fire Protection and Prevention Act and Emergency Management Act and their regulations
  • Familiarity with Provincial Offences Act and Occupational Health & Safety Act and their regulations
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, team building, conflict resolution, business/technical writing skills, coaching and mentoring abilities
  • Excellent organizational, supervisory and time management skills
  • Valid Class DZ driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract
  • Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office Suite software (word processing, spreadsheet)
  • Physically able to perform firefighting duties
  • Must provide a vulnerable sector check satisfactory to the Employer
  • Willing to attend meetings outside normal work hours, including periodic weekend and evening on-call duties and/or responding to after-hours emergencies as required
Hours of Work:            40 per week
Salary:                         Commensurate with experience and qualifications
