Under the direction of the CAO, the Fire Chief will provide leadership and overall management to Municipality’s volunteer fire department, in order to ensure that loss of life, property or injury as the result of fire is prevented and/or minimized. Coordinates the development, promotion, and maintence of the fire department’s public education program and activities. Incumbent carry’s out fiscal, administrative, operational, and planning functions for the department. Conducts regular scheduled Fire Prevention Inspections, Fire Investigation, and Inspections on request or complaint basis. The incumbent provides enforcement of the Fire Code, in conjunction with the Building Code. The position fulfills the mandated requirements of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act. Provides support to all Departments in promoting fire prevention and management strategies for municipal property and facilities.

The ideal candidate must have:

Education:
  • A college diploma in Fire Protection Technology or equivalent.
  • Must be certified or willing to acquire the following NFPA standards:
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer 3
  • NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level 1 and Level 2
  • NFPA 921 Fire & Explosion Investigator
  • NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator
  • NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator Level 1
  • Ontario Fire College Fire Code courses (Legislation, Part 2/6, Courtroom Procedures, Part 9, Part 3/5, Part 4).
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a deputy chief or senior level firefighter, comprehensive knowledge of operations within a volunteer fire department.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in fire prevention, advanced knowledge of modern firefighting and fire prevention methods.
  • Certification or willingness to achieve certification as a Health and Safety Committee member.
  • A proven track record of high quality municipal accomplishments in a professional or volunteer department.
  • Valid DZ Driver’s Licence.
Knowledge & Skills:
  • Expert knowledge in fire prevention, education and suppression techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of Ontario’s Fire Legislation/Regulations, Fire Prevention and Protection Act and Part 3 of the Ontario Building Code.
  • Expert in the area of hazardous material handling.
  • Experience in preparing equipment maintenance schedules and plans, and developing accurate training materials for volunteer firefighters.
  • A commitment to continuing education in order to further the incumbent’s knowledge and remain current in one’s area of expertise.
  • Experience in writing and implementing policies and procedures, and developing sound business processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal, project/time/records management, organizational, analytical, research, communication, presentation, problem-solving, and staff leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to think and act strategically and appropriately in a political and community service environment; to build strong and enthusiastic staff teams and external alliances/partnerships; to align departmental programs/services with corporate goals/objectives; and to foster a positive, productive, and healthy/safe work environment that is committed to service excellence.
  • Thorough working knowledge of municipal government, legislation/regulations/standards (e.g. the Occupational Health and Safety Act) and contemporary management practices.
  • Computer literacy utilizing word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software, related recreation/operations applications, the internet and social media.
  • Conflict resolution and management skills.
  • Knowledge and experience with operational and capital budget preparation.
  • Superior customer service skills and ability to work in a confidential environment with a high level of attention to detail.
Hours of Work: 35 Hours per week.
Wage: commensurate with experience and qualifications.
