Responsible for planning, coordinating and directing the City of Vaughan Fire & Rescue Services operations, and related emergency and support services. Under the direction of the Deputy Fire Chief(s), provides administrative and technical assistance respecting departmental and operational issues including the formation and implementation of policies, procedures and the preparation of reports/budgets. Develops and implements a variety of projects and/or programs such as but not limited to community training and fire prevention programs and is responsible for supervising the maintenance of fire apparatus, equipment, facilities and departmental records as assigned. Liaises with Federal, Provincial and Municipal agencies, as required. Operating outside of normal business hours as necessary (rotating on-call requirement), conducting supervisory functions, public outreach, media relations, logistics and support.

Qualifications and experience:
  • Possesses education in fire engineering technology or suitable equivalent and/or graduate of the Ontario Fire College Fire Officer Program (or equivalency).
  • Minimum of five (5) years practical experience as a fire fighter including five (5) years’ experience as a Fire Officer.
  • Working knowledge of applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation, Ontario Fire Code, Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Ontario Building Code, National Fire Prevention Association, existing standards, related and existing municipal by-laws, legislation and standards.
  • Proven effective report writing; statistical data analysis skills, and preparation of business cases.
  • Must be familiar with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the regulations that apply to Fire and Rescue Service, and acquire necessary qualifications.
  • Ability to deal with the public directly under trying circumstances. Excellent research, statistical, analytical and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Highly developed organizational, analytical, research and business planning skills; effective leadership, facilitation, interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to express ideas effectively, orally and in writing; ability to effectively provide advice and direction.
  • Knowledge of, and demonstrated ability in, the city’s core competencies and relevant functional competencies.
  • Must possess a valid Ontario ‘G’ Class Driver’s License in good standing.
  • Must be able to obtain provincial CEMC qualifications.
  • Incident command qualifications and experience is an asset.
