FireCon Courses

NEW THIS YEAR: Registration for ALL courses (including the Leadership Track) will be done through the OFM Training and Certification Portal. Reminder: Portal invitations are issued by the fire department (not OFM), those not in the Portal should communicate with their Fire Chief or designate in advance to request access and complete their setup

Only 2 members per department can register per course in the first week. After May 4th additional members can sign up from the same department if there is still spots available. 

 

Exterior Attack Firefighter with Auto Ex (Hybrid) - 6 days

*Please note there is TWO classes running for Exterior Attack Firefighter. One at the Training Centre and one at the Valhalla. Classes will be split once registration is full.*

Description

This comprehensive course is designed to equip firefighters with the essential skills and knowledge required to respond and operate safely and effectively in exterior or non-IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) areas of a fire scene. It focuses on exterior fire dynamics, the application of safety protocols, and gaining proficiency with the equipment used in exterior fire attacks. Firefighters will master various exterior attack techniques, optimize water application, and develop effective communication strategies for cohesive incident management. The course includes theory sessions, practical training, and scenario-based drills to ensure hands-on experience and proficiency in exterior operations.

Hybrid delivery

Students must complete the online coursework prior to the commencement of the in-class sessions. If the online learning portion and assignments are not completed and submitted on time, students will not be permitted to attend at the in-class portion of the course.

Online Hours: 40 Hours.

Requirements

Required Textbook: IFSTA Essentials 7th Edition

Standard First Aid, CPR Level “C”, and AED

Students are required to bring their own self-controlled breathing apparatus (SCBA) and two air cylinders. Information and guidance on safely transporting SCBA and cylinders tare included in the pre-class information package for this program.

Fire Instructor Level 2 (Hybrid) - 5 Days

Description

This course will build and expand on the knowledge and requisite skills of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1041, 2019 Edition Fire Instructor I. Students will develop skills and knowledge that will enhance the department’s planning, implementation, and evaluation of training and educational programs.

Hybrid delivery

Students must complete the online coursework prior to the commencement of the in-class sessions. If the online learning portion and assignments are not completed and submitted on time, students will not be permitted to attend at the in-class portion of the course.

Online Hours: 20 Hours

Requirements

Required Textbook: IFSTA- Fire and Emergency Services Instructor- 9th Edition

A memory stick is required, and a laptop is highly recommended for this course. Students must bring a copy of the Skills Sheets booklet located in their course materials.

Prerequisites

To apply, you must have completed one of the following courses:

  • OFC-1041  - Fire Instructor Level 1 (hybrid) 
  • ASE - 1041  - NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level I

Fire Officer Level 2 (Hybrid) - 5 Days

Description

Fire Officer II builds upon the topics covered in Fire Officer I. There is a more in-depth look at human resources management, community and government relations, as well as the origin and preliminary cause of fires. Emergency delivery topics will evolve from single unit emergency operations to multi-unit emergency operations, with a more in-depth look at pre-incident planning and deployment of assigned resources. In addition, Fire Officer II covers the organization of local government and the roles that outside agencies play in assisting the fire service. Fire Officer II is intended for frontline fire officers with an expanded role.

Hybrid delivery

Given that this is a hybrid course, with a significant amount of pre-class work that must be completed before attending the in-class sessions, the Office of the Registrar will not be able to accommodate replacements of students or add additional students once the redemption codes for the pre-class have been issued.

Rope Rescue Operations (Hybrid) - 5 Days

Description

This comprehensive Rope Rescue Awareness and Operations course is designed to equip emergency responders with the knowledge and skills required to perform rope rescue safely and effectively. Aligned with NFPA 1006 Chapter 5 standards and meeting the regulatory requirements in Ontario, the program provides a progressive training structure to ensure students master the required rope rescue skills. At the Awareness level, participants will gain an understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment, personal protective equipment (PPE), and incident command considerations. Emphasis is placed on scene safety, resource allocation, and establishing control zones. Students learn fundamental rope rescue terminology and communication protocols to support higher-level responders. Building on the Awareness level foundation, the Operations level focuses on hands-on skills for rescue scenarios. Participants will perform anchor system construction, set up and operate mechanical advantage systems, and conduct belaying and lowering evolutions. Critical thinking and teamwork are emphasized to manage incidents efficiently. Students will demonstrate the ability to stabilize and package patients securely for evacuation, ensuring the integrity of both victim and rescuer throughout the rescue evolution. Throughout the course, participants will learn to interpret and apply Ontario’s relevant regulations, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Emphasis is placed on safe work practices, due diligence, and emergency planning to protect responders and the public. Additional instruction on documentation and incident reporting ensures accountability and compliance with local and provincial requirements. On the last day of the course, certification testing will take place for NFPA 1006 Chapter 5 - Rope Rescue Operation Level.

Hazmat Operations (Hybrid) - 4 Days

Description

This blended course will provide students with both Awareness and Operations level information they need to take appropriate actions at hazardous materials spills or releases and WMD incidents. The scope of this course is to train Firefighters to meet the Awareness, Operations, and Mission-Specific job performance requirements (JPRs) in chapters 5, 7 and 9 of NFPA 470, Hazardous Materials Standards for Responders, 2022 Edition. It addresses the Awareness and Operations Level Responder’s responsibility to recognize the presence of hazardous materials and WMDs, secure the area, don personnel protection, and request the assistance of trained technicians, when necessary. Additionally, it addresses the control of hazardous materials releases and WMDs using operations for which the responders have been trained.

Fire Investigator (Hybrid) - 4 Days

Description

This blended course covers all investigative competencies associated with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1033 Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator, 2022 Edition, including Scientific Method, Origin and Cause, Scene Documentation, Scene Safety, Chemistry of Fire, Building Construction, and Scene Reconstructions. This course also provides in-depth instruction in all aspects of assessing and investigating fire scenes relevant to fire protection services and adheres to the NFPA 921 Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations, 2021 Edition, which is the guide to fire and explosion and investigation.

Provincial testing through Academic Standards and Evaluation (AS&E) with the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) will be conducted at the conclusion of the course. The OFM is currently transitioning to the 2022 Edition of NFPA 1033. The NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator courses will be run as a pilot to the 2021 Edition. Certification through AS&E could be delayed while we are in the transitional process.

Hybrid delivery

This course is complex in writing, math, and science and students must have a complex understanding of the fire sciences prior to arrival. Students must have the ability to compete their own fire investigation with the support of their fire chief within 6 months to achieve certification.

Students are responsible for completing all requirements as noted in the course outline package prior to arrival. This includes bringing any textbooks, equipment, materials or clothing indicated for the course. Students that arrive unprepared or do not bring the required items will not be eligible to participate.

Incident Command (Hybrid) - 4 Days 

Description

This course is designed to introduce both aspiring and current incident commanders to the incident management system and provide essential knowledge for effective operation as an incident commander. It emphasizes the development and application of skills needed to prioritize tasks, make informed decisions amid uncertainty, assess risks, evaluate resource requirements, anticipate hazards, communicate effectively, and ensure the physical and mental health and safety of responders.

Target Audience

The target audience for this course is fire officers and command officers. Participants are expected to have a minimum of five (5) years experience as a firefighter. Successful completion of this course requires access to internal Department documents and data, including radio report structures, tactical worksheets, resource and mutual aid procedures, and other relevant command system policies and procedures.

This course is designed to enhance leadership abilities, command presence and support the development of processes and habits. This course is focused on real world skills and the development of a mental model of incident management. This course entails significant peer engagement including weekly online discussions and assignments. The pre-course and in-class portion of the course require engagement and active participation. Participants should allocate approximately five (5) hours per week to complete the requirements of the online pre-course.

Online Hours: 30 hours over 6 weeks

Fire and Life Safety Educator Level 1 - 3 Days

Description

This course provides students with the skills necessary to deliver and coordinate existing fire and life safety education at various levels within a community. This course examines fire behaviour, human behaviour during fire, educational methodology, and basic fire protection systems and devices. This course will also cover the scheduling of fire and life safety activities, identifying and recognizing opportunities for shared efforts with common fire and life safety goals, recognizing and mitigating potential hazards, and adapting lesson plans to the needs of the audience.

The Warren Brinkman Leadership Track - 2 Days

Description

The Warren Brinkman Leadership Track is focused on building strong, capable firefighters and officers who can lead both on the fireground and in the station.

This track looks at what effective leadership actually means day to day, from making decisions under pressure to setting expectations, supporting your crew, and creating a positive, accountable culture. It’s practical, experience-driven, and aimed at helping officers lead with confidence and consistency.

Designed for current and aspiring officers, the goal is simple: better leadership, stronger teams, and a more connected department.

Session details and speakers will be shared as they are finalized.
