FSMC 007 - Labour Relations - Fire Services 

 
The relationship between Labour and Management can make or break an organization, particularly in the environment of an organized workforce.

An overview of labour relations interests and areas of responsibility including labour law, Ministry of Labour, grievances, mediation, arbitration, investigation and collective bargaining will be studied. Role-playing exercises will be utilized for practical, hands-on learning such that participants can realize the importance of their most valuable resource and the impact of poor labour relations practices.
 
This course is part of the Humber College Fire Service Executive Management Certificate program, and counts as one (1) of the twelve (12) compulsory courses required towards the certificate.
 
The cost for this course is $365 plus HST.  A minimum of 12 participants must be registered in order for the course to proceed.

Gary T Furlong, B.A., LL.M. (ADR), C.Med, Chartered Accountant
Gary Furlong has extensive experience in labour mediation, alternative dispute resolution, organizational facilitation, negotiation, and conflict resolution.  Gary is past president of the ADR Institute of Ontario, is a Chartered Mediator (C. Med.) and holds his Master of Laws (ADR) from Osgoode Hall Law School.  Gary is the author of “The Conflict Resolution Toolbox”, John Wiley and was awarded the McGowan Award of Excellence in ADR in 2005.
 
As a mediator, Gary has worked in the areas of labour, workplace, wrongful dismissal, commercial, personal injury, construction, insurance, and specializes in intervening in difficult organizational and workplace disputes.  In workplace and organizational disputes, Gary has mediated poisoned work environment, harassment, and dysfunctional work team issues, ranging in size from two-party disputes to groups of over 80 individuals. In the labour area, Gary has mediated many collective agreements, labour board complaints and grievance issues, and specializes in return-from-strike facilitation. Gary has worked with a wide range of companies in the private sector, in the public sector with municipalities, provincial governments and the federal government, and with unions including the Unifor, Teamsters, CUPE, ONA, OPSEU, and PSAC. Gary conducts Relationship by Objectives intervention work to improve union/management relations, and specializes in joint union/management bargaining training with a wide range of unions and employers. 
 
Gary has worked with the Queen’s University Industrial Relations Department conducting research into employment models of dispute resolution in Canadian companies, and teaches a number of labour-related courses at the Queen’s University Industrial Relations Centre along with advanced mediation skills at York University.
 
Gary is a principal with Agree Dispute Resolution, and is a graduate of Stanford University in California.
