Blazes called in minutes apart - Sudbury Star
(Mar 08, 2010)

A man was injured after he tried to put out a fire caused by careless smoking at his Nolin Street home early Sunday morning.

The blaze was one of two that Greater Sudbury Fire Services had to deal with. They were reported within three minutes of each other.

Firefighters were called to 232 Nolin St. at 3:18 a.m. Sunday, while a call for a fire at a Burton Avenue home came in at 3:21 a.m.

"The fire was contained to the bedroom. The cause for that is careless smoking," said Greater Sudbury Fire Services platoon chief Tony Thibeault of the Nolin Street blaze.

The man tried to put the fire out on his own.

"While trying to put the fire out, he sustained some minor burns to his hair and forehead," Thibeault said. "He was treated by emergency medical services on the scene and released."

Meanwhile, at 3:21 a.m., fire-f i g ht e r s were called to 515 Burton Ave.

The home belongs to Arthur Santos.

He had just finished renovations on the home and planned to rent it out, he said.

"It was all finished," he said as he stood outside the home on Sunday afternoon.

The yard was marked with yellow police tape.

Investigators from Greater Sudbury Police and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal are investigating.

"There is substantial damage to the interior of the house," Thibeault said.
