MOUNT FOREST – At the Aug. 28 Wellington North Council meeting, District Chief Bill Heiber received an award celebrating 25 years of service with the Wellington North Fire Service.

While presenting the award, Councillor Lisa Hern said, “That’s a considerable amount of time to devote to one’s community, let alone, put your life on the line.”

Heiber started his 27th year of service Aug. 20. When asked why he joined the fire department he said it was his older brother John that influenced him.

“He kind of talked me into it. I’d see him rushing to the call, riding the truck – that was back in the day when you could still ride the tailboard and you’d fly up Main Street on the tailboard of the pumper.”

Heiber says he has enjoyed working for the Mount Forest Fire Department and the new Wellington North Fire Department.

“I had to get that in there too. I was part of the amalgamation team back when Ron MacEachern was chief and I was his deputy. There was a lot of work put in to bringing us all together and it’s working,” said Heiber.
