Smoke alarm checks set to begin, Arnprior firefighters to go door-to-door in April and May in annual safety campaign

EMC news - The annual home smoke alarm inspection program in Arnprior will once again take place in the community, the town's fire department announced this week.

The program will begin around the third week in April and will continue into May and possibly June. Members from the Arnprior Fire Department will be knocking on doors, asking for co-operation in order to inspect and test your home's smoke alarm.

The Arnprior Fire Department Smoke Alarm Inspection Program began in 2006 and has continued annually as a service to the community. The program gives the fire department an opportunity to meet community members and aids in collecting data for statistical purposes, while focusing on ensuring adequate working smoke alarms in the home and providing public education regarding fire safety.

The 2012 program is expected to reach 250 homes in the community.

Firefighters will be visiting in the evening hours during the week and daytime hours on the weekend. They will be dressed in Arnprior Fire Department uniforms and be carrying identification.

Homeowners are encouraged to be co-operative and invite firefighters into their homes to allow them to inspect and test smoke alarms. Firefighters will be looking for proper quantity, proper placement and working condition of the smoke alarms to ensure they are in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code.

Homeowners will be informed of any violations and asked to correct them. Firefighters will provide assistance to homeowner by providing new batteries or a new smoke alarm (battery-operated) on a cost recovery basis.

Any questions the public may have should be directed to the Arnprior Fire Department Fire Prevention Office at 613-623-4231, extension 250, or the fire chief at extension 248.

For additional information, visit the Town of Arnprior website at www.arnprior.ca or the Ontario Fire Marshal's website at www.ofm.gov.on.ca.

Every home in Ontario must have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas, emphasizes the fire department.

"It's the law."
