THUNDER BAY -- Despite plenty of publicity about the law that requires a working smoke alarm on every level of a home, and outside all sleeping areas, some homeowners are still being ticketed for non-compliance.

Thunder Bay firefighters found no operating smoke alarm in the basement of a Mountdale Avenue residence where a fire broke out on Sept. 16.

Two occupants of the home suffered minor burns in the incident.

The owner received a ticket that carries a fine of $360.

Ontario law also requires carbon monoxide alarms to be installed outside any sleeping area if a home has a fuel-fired appliance, fireplace or attached garage.
