Ice rescue

Two men were rescued after falling through ice on Rice Lake.

The men were ice fishing off Dunnette Landing Road and fell through the ice into Rice Lake, said Alnwick/Haldimand Deputy Fire Chief Allan Sheppard. Emergency crews were called before 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23. A nearby resident said he heard the men yelling and called 911.

Fire crews used an inflatable ice rescue craft to pull the two men to safety, said Sheppard. The two anglers had been in the water for some time and were cold but likely would be okay, he said. They were transported to hospital by ambulance.

The two men were not from the area, said Sheppard. Anglers from out of town often come to Dunnette Landing to fish, said the resident.

With warmer temperatures in recent days, the ice is not safe to walk out on at the moment, said Sheppard.

Two men were rescued from the same place on Feb. 28, 2017.
